DRY NEEDLING

What You Need to Know

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique physical therapists use (where allowed by state law) for the treatment of myofascial pain and movement impairments.  The technique uses a thin "dry" filiform needle, one without medication or injection substance, inserted through the skin into trigger point areas of the muscle.

Other terms commonly used to describe dry needling, include trigger point dry needling, and intramuscular manual therapy.

Dry needling is not acupuncture, a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles and supported by research for treating myofascial pain and movement impairments.

What is a Trigger Point?

Myofascial Trigger Points are hard, discrete, palpable nodules in a taut band of skeletal muscle located within a larger muscle group that may be spontaneously painful (i.e. active), or painful only on compression (i.e. latent).

How Does Dry Needling Help?

Physical therapists use dry needling to release or inactivate myofascial trigger points to relieve pain coming from the muscle or improve range of motion from muscle tension. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient's return to active rehabilitation.

In cases when physical therapists use dry needling, it is one technique that is part of a larger treatment plan. Physical therapists who perform dry needling obtain knowledge by participating in specific postgraduate education and training for pain management of myofascial pain and dysfunction conditions.
